Sketchbook Assignment #17 - Drawing Materials

·  Drawing must use full color or shading. You may use crayons, pencils, colored pencils, paint, etc. (3 points).

This week's sketchbook assignment: Drawing Materials

1. Choose at least 3 different art materials (ideas: paintbrush, pencil, pen, marker, crayon, colored pencil, watercolors, oil pastels, eraser, glue, scissors, etc) and set them up in a still-life. 

2. Draw these materials as large as you can in pencil. 

3. Color your drawing in with any material(s) you like. I used markers and some outlining with thin Sharpie.

This week's sketchbook assignment: Matisse Still-life

Henri Matisse (1869 - 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of color. He was not worried about making his paintings look real, but rather that they had interesting arrangements of colors and shapes.

1. Start with drawing a vase and flowers. Add a circle for the table. Add the room lines. Draw simple flowers in the vase.Try to make the art look flat, rather than 3D, because that is what Matisse liked to do. Trace your lines with black permanent marker. 

2. Use crayons to color to color the flowers and leaves. Draw different line patterns on all the other surfaces. Keep them large and simple. 

3. Use watercolor paint to fill in all the areas.

This week's sketchbook assignment: Thiebaud: Favorite Dessert

Wayne Thiebaud (born November 15, 1920) is an American painter widely known for his colorful works depicting commonplace objects—pies, lipsticks, paint cans, ice cream cones, pastries, and hot dogs—as well as for his landscapes and figure paintings.

1. Decide on your favorite dessert. Think about how Thiebaud painted his desserts not only once, but many times in the same painting, sort of like a display in a store (see examples above). 

2. Draw your favorite dessert AT LEAST three times. Don't forget a background! 

3. You may color the desserts differently or the same. 

4. You may use any art materials you would like to color this assignment. I used crayons to color in mine.

This week's sketchbook assignment: 20 year portrait

1. Sketch yourself as you think you would look in 20 years! What would you look like? What would you be wearing? What job would you have? Where would you be living? Draw all of it!

2. Add color with your choice of materials. The portrait can be full body or from the shoulders up. Have fun!

This week's sketchbook assignment: Favorite Artist

1. Time to give props to your favorite artist! You may copy a piece of art by your favorite artist OR come up with your own piece of art done in the STYLE of your favorite artist.

2. You may complete this assignment using any material or combination of materials you would like. I used colored sharpies and crayons for mine.

This week's sketchbook assignment: Fruit Still-life

A "still-life" is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate objects, typically every day items that are either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, etc.).

1. Put together a still-life of at least 3 pieces of fruit or vegetables. You can set them on a table, in a bowl, in a vase, try setting them up at different levels (two on a table, one on a box). Get creative!

2. Sketch your still-life with pencil. Try your best to draw big! 

3. Continuing to look at the still-life, color your sketch in using your choice of materials. I colored mine in with crayons. 

4. While coloring, don't forget to use value (lights and darks). Sometimes it helps to squint your eyes while looking at the still-life to find the light and dark areas. 

5. Don't forget to color in the table and the wall (my table is gray and my wall is blue). 

6. Rather than using black for all the dark areas and shadows, try using blue for the shadows or complementary colors (green/red; blue/orange; purple/yellow).

This week's sketchbook assignment: Robert Indiana "Love"

Robert Indiana (born September 13, 1928) is an American artist associated with the Pop Art movement. Indiana's best known image is the word "love" in upper case letters, arranged in a square with a tilted letter "O".

1. Start by using a ruler to make 2 rows of 3 inch boxes. 

2. Draw the block letters, one in each box, as shown.

3. Add diagonal lines to begin making your block letters look three-dimensional.

4. Now finish your 3-d block letters as shown.  

5. Trace over your boxes and letters using black marker.  

6. Using crayons, color the block letters with one color, pressing hard for dark areas and lightly for lighter areas (the sides of the letters).

7. Finish by choosing two colors of crayon for the squares and alternate their placement, as shown. Don't forget to add the title "Robert Indiana, born 1928 American Pop Artist" in marker to complete your assignment. Nice job!
