Sketchbook Assignment #16 - Element of Art - "Color"

Due February 5
Assignment MUST be competed in your sketchbook, or you will receive a zero.
Be sure to follow these guidelines for every assignment:
  • Drawing must fill the entire page (3 points)
  • Drawing must use full color or shading. You may use crayons, pencils, colored pencils, paint, etc. Your choice. (3 points)
  • Drawing must show great attention to detail (3 points)
  • The date your sketch is due must be written in the top right corner of the page (1 point)
This week's assignment: Element of Art - "Color"
  1.  Carefully draw a border around the edge of your sketchbook page. Trace with black marker.
  2. Write the title, "Elements of Art - Color" in large letters across the top. Trace with black marker.
  3. Write the definition of color: three primary colors - red, blue, yellow - are used to make all others.
  4. Draw a large circle, about the size of a CD (you can use one to trace). Write "Color Wheel" above or below. 
  5. Draw lines with a ruler to divide the circle into six sections. 
  6. Write the names of the primary colors: Red, Yellow and Blue with a space between them. Then write the names of the secondary coors: Orange, Green and Purple in the remaining slots. Trace all the lines with marker and color or paint accordingly.

Sketchbook Assignment #15 - Textured Castle Drawing

Due January 29
Assignment MUST be competed in your sketchbook, or you will receive a zero.
Be sure to follow these guidelines for every assignment:
  • Drawing must fill the entire page (3 points)
  • Drawing must use full color or shading. You may use crayons, pencils, colored pencils, paint, etc. Your choice. (3 points)
  • Drawing must show great attention to detail (3 points)
  • The date your sketch is due must be written in the top right corner of the page (1 point)
This week's assignment: Textured Castle Drawing
  1.  First, draw three rectangles, two for the towers and one for the main wall. 
  2. Next, draw two triangles to form the conical spires. Repeat the same process to sketch another tower in the middle.
  3. Add some details like the flags, bricks and the arrow slits. 
  4. Make sure to draw large enough to fill the paper. Trace edges in marker.
  5. Apply white gum labels in a staggered manner to look like stone blocks. 
  6. Color in your castle with colored pencils or crayons, rubbing over the labels. Don't forget to color in the sky and ground!

Sketchbook #10 - Negative Space Drawing

Due November 13 
Assignment MUST be competed in your sketchbook, or you will receive a zero.
Be sure to follow these guidelines for every assignment:
  • Drawing must fill the entire page (3 points)
  • Drawing must use full color or shading. You may use crayons, pencils, colored pencils, paint, etc. Your choice. (3 points)
  • Drawing must show great attention to detail (3 points)
  • The date your sketch is due must be written in the top right corner of the page (1 point)
This week's assignment: Negative Space Drawing
  1. Lightly trace a pair of small scissors at least 3 times onto your sketchbook page.
  2. Color the background using at least 3 different colors of crayons, in any pattern, as long as the end result is solid. No light or scribbly coloring allowed! The bolder background, the more the scissors stand out. 
  3. Leave the inside of the scissors empty (white).

Sketchbook Assignment #9 - Magazine Color Collage

Due November 6

  • Drawing must use full color or shading. You may use crayons, pencils, colored pencils, paint, etc. Your choice. (3 points)
  • Drawing must show great attention to detail (3 points)

This week's assignment: Magazine color collage
  1. Choose a color. 
  2. Search for magazine photos and collect as many different objects or swatches in your chosen color as possible.
  3. Cut out and glue of your images onto your sketchbook page, with the goal of overlapping and filling up the page.

Sketchbook Assignment #8 - Element of Art - "Value"

Due October 30 
Assignment MUST be competed in your sketchbook, or you will receive a zero.
Be sure to follow these guidelines for every assignment:
  • Drawing must fill the entire page (3 points)
  • Drawing must use full color or shading. You may use crayons, pencils, colored pencils, paint, etc. Your choice. (3 points)
  • Drawing must show great attention to detail (3 points)
  • The date your sketch is due must be written in the top right corner of the page (1 point)
This week's assignment: Element of Art - "Value" drawing
  1. Draw a simple border around the sketchbook paper. 
  2. Write the title, "Element of Art - Value" in large letters at the top of the paper. Trace with marker.
  3. Below the title, write the definition of value - the lightness or darkness of a color, used to add light and shadow.
  4. Below the definition, draw 3 boxes and make these 3 shades of gray, using just a pencil. Add a simple house below.
  5. Draw a horizon line.
  6. Add a road and hills in the background. Fill all areas with at least 3 different shades of gray.

Sketchbook Assignment #11 - Contour Drawing

Due November 20 
Assignment MUST be competed in your sketchbook, or you will receive a zero.
Be sure to follow these guidelines for every assignment:

  • Drawing must use full color or shading. You may use crayons, pencils, colored pencils, paint, etc. Your choice. (3 points)
  • Drawing must show great attention to detail (3 points)
  • The date your sketch is due must be written in the top right corner of the page (1 point)
This week's assignment: Contour Drawing
  1. Trace your hand in pencil. Unusual placement and cropping is encouraged!
  2. Use a thick or thin black Sharpie or other black marker, draw in as many line details as you can (nails, wrinkles, etc.).
  3. Choose a line pattern and completely fill in the background (negative space).
